OK it is unlikely the connection, on the start menu under the network settings in the game you should be able to see 3 or 4 options: local, system link, Xbox live, xbl party. As long as the indicator is on system link you should be good, then exit out of the start menu and press "x" you should be able to join your friends by selecting their gamer tag.
If it states "not joinable" you may need to connect each console to live and start the game to get the latest halo 4 updates. The "join" option is locked.
